Oh my goodness! I should be an expert on this topic! I have lost ALL of my images twice now, and I am here to tell you that it is so important to store your precious images more than one or even two places. This is why!
When my husband and I moved our sweet little family to Buda my senior photography business had been up and running for about two years. My process was to take my sd card after a session and save it to my computer.I would edit my session and then put on a cd and deliver to my clients. Not only did I put all of my clients images on that machine but also all of my family images. They were not backed up onto the cloud they were just there on my hard drive on my machine. I got that call one day from my Jon that our house had been broken into and everything was gone. So you already know what is next they took my computer and camera and all the things. But the most important to me were my family images and then next were my client images that were now gone. I had three senior sessions that I was in the process of editing on that machine! We never got the computer back and I had to re-shoot those sessions thanking Jesus for such amazing and understanding clients. But if I had those images on an external hard drive or backed up to the cloud I would not have been in such a pickle. The family images of us and our son for the first year are gone forever unless they were printed or were put on facebook.
Fast forward 4 years later and I have learned my lesson and now I backup all of my images to an external hard drive and I save everything there. So any continuing education, templates, all clients photos and my family photos are safe. But are they really safe if they are just on an external hard drive that if dropped just the right way on the floor of an elevator will not work anymore? Ahhhhh I know I am killing you trust me this killed me too! Once again I had put EVERYTHING onto one device and not backed that device up. Thank goodness for my computer guy and his connections he put me in touch with a great recovery company but this type of recovery is super pricey!! Like SUPER PRICEY, Like MORTGAGE PAYMENT PRICEY! But it had everything on it and I had to try. They were able to recover everything but I finally learned my very hard lesson. You have to back up multiple places. It is just to risky to leave it to what if because that what if will happen and you will be devastated.
So now I have two hard drives that keep all of my information for me. Because I would hate to lose these sweet images of my sweet babies!!
